Welcome - MALMS Summary |
MALMS (Mobile Airfield Light Monitoring System) has been developed specifically to accurately, repeatedly, rapidly and easily measure the performance of safety critical Aeronautical Ground Lighting (AGL) systems against the criteria for beam intensity and orientation defined by ICAO standards (see - Why Maintain).
Developed by Tailor Made Systems Ltd., following an extensive research program commissioned by the UK Civil Aviation Authority and Ministry of Defence MALMS provides accurate photometric measurement of both inset and elevated AGL services on airfield runways and taxiways, and replaces visual observations or spot readings with a light meter, which are typically inaccurate and incomplete (see - Why Measure)
With the performance of runway lighting equipment an important factor in maintaining safety and Landing Success Rates, MALMS enables airports to cost effectively comply with ICAO Standards and associated National Standards (see - What is Best Practice) . The system's ability to pinpoint lighting degradation problems, and so help effectively target maintenance work, can reduce the cost of maintaining performance to the required standard, or enable system performance to be improved without additional resources. MALMS is increasingly being used to demonstrate that new AGL systems are fully compliant with the ICAO standard as part of the commissioning process for new runway build or refurbishment projects. Any problems not identified at this time will affect future AGL performance and maintenance costs (see - Why MALMS & Why Differential Maintenance).
The MALMS product range has been designed as a robust system for use at speed on operational runways and in AGL refurbishment workshops on a regular basis without the need for a high level of operator skill. MALMS is now regularly employed at the major UK airports, including London Heathrow, and airports throughout Europe, Australia and the USA (See What Benefits Summary).
